Flacon Montre (Watch) c1936 - 1999
Flacon created by Pochet et du Courval to hold eaux de toilette, first used with Cachet Jaune in 1936, also held various other scents such as Shalimar, Mitsouko, Jicky, Fol Arome, Chamade, Chant D'Aromes, Liu, L'Heure Bleue, Vol de Nuit, Sous Le Vent, Chypre 53, Parure and more.
A 1950 article reads "Guerlain recommends spraying a room with their famous Shalimar eau de cologne. This is a lighter form of their famous perfume. Because it is lighter, it is less expensive and can be used more lavishly."
Since it was used for all of Guerlain's standard colognes, only the central disk of color varied with the names of perfume. Some perfumes had two or more different colored dots at different times, such as the case for Shalimar which originally had a red dot, but was later seen with a navy blue one.

My Father bought in 1946 in Paris a perfume bottle for my Grandmother who in turn gave it to me for my 21st birthday....I am now 73 years of age. It looks like a Flacon Montre bottle what intrigues me is that it has silver filagree on the stopper and part of the bottom half of the bottle. At the base of the bottle it says GUERLAIN 9% alcoolique made in France.The silver filagree is detachable on the bottle and stopper. I hope you can assist me as to who it might have been made for as I can not see any Flacon Montre bottles having this beautiful filagree. Thank you.

The bottle you mention had custom made filigree ornamentation probably done by a jeweler as it did not originally come from Guerlain like that. I have seen this type of work on other vintage bottles, some were purchased in China, Japan and other parts of the world. The ornamentation is always of sterling silver but usually has no maker's marks on the silver. I have seen the silverwork on bottles by Chanel, Dana and others. I think they look special. I have speculated that a jeweler had applied the ornamentation and then may have sold it in his shop or an associated gift shop, and retailed at a possible extravagant price due to the upgraded ornamentation. What a beautiful heirloom you have, please continue to enjoy :)
DeleteThere is currently such a flacon for sale on EBay! I remembered reading this article and in scanning the ads (which I do obsessively) - I have come across a watch flacon of Shalimar, with the filigree silver cap but no silver on the bottle. Note, too, that the bottle nears a sticker from Mexico!
ReplyDeleteThere is a Guerlain Shalimar in the watch flacon, currently for sale on EBay with just such a silver filigree cap as mentioned above. There is no silver on the body but there is a sticker, indicating the perfume was purchased in Mexico! Curious!
